KGA Toolbox ▸ Data Management ▸ Add Open Data and Basemap

ការប្រើប្រាស់

  • The window is modeless: the map stays usable while it is open, so an area can be drawn on it and a map-extent area follows the map as you pan. Clicking the ribbon button again brings the open window to the front.
  • The form rearranges itself for the chosen Data type and Data source. Only the rows the current choice needs are shown.
  • Nothing is downloaded before it is described. Picking a country costs one small metadata request, and the Details panel then shows the publisher, the year, the licence, the feature count and the download size. Add to Map is enabled only once the details are known.
  • Data types and sources
Data typeSources
Administrative boundariesgeoBoundaries (global, ADM0–ADM5 where published; release and geometry detail selectable), HDX / OCHA COD-AB (p-coded humanitarian boundaries; one download carries every level), Natural Earth (public domain; 1:10m, 1:50m or 1:110m; one country or the whole world), KGA Database (listed, not yet connected)
Other vector dataCustom URL or API — a GeoJSON file, a zipped shapefile or file geodatabase, a GeoPackage, KML/KMZ, an ArcGIS REST layer (ending in /FeatureServer/0 or /MapServer/0, paged so services that cap replies still arrive complete) or a WFS endpoint
Basemap tile layerOpenStreetMap, Google Satellite / Hybrid / Terrain / Terrain Hybrid / Map, ESRI Topography / Imagery / National Geographic / Grey (Dark) / Grey (Light), or a custom {z}/{x}/{y} tile address
Open digital elevation (DEM)Copernicus DEM on AWS (GLO-30 / GLO-90, no account), OpenTopography Global DEM API (Copernicus, SRTM, NASADEM, ALOS, EU-DTM, SRTM15+, GEBCO, GEDI; free API key)
Open land cover (LULC)Esri Land Cover 10 m (Sentinel-2, every year since 2017), ESA WorldCover 10 m (2020, 2021)
  • An admin level a country does not publish is listed but greyed out, so the gap is visible.
  • Vector data is imported into the project's default geodatabase as a new feature class, named after the Layer name, and the dataset's attribution, licence and source address are written into its metadata.
  • Basemaps are added at the bottom of the map. Narrowing the Zoom levels sets the layer's visible scale range. Also keep it permanently saves the tile layer as a layer file in Documents\ArcGIS\KGA Basemaps and adds that folder to Catalog Favorites, so it is available in every project.
  • DEM and land cover are requested by area. The Area can be:
AreaResult
Current map extentThe bounding box of the map view; it follows the map as you pan.
Draw a rectangle or polygon on the mapCut to the drawn shape, NoData outside it.
Clip to a polygon layer's boundaryCut to the layer's polygons (optionally the selected ones), dissolved.
Extent of a layerThe bounding box of any layer.
  • A DEM or land-cover result is a GeoTIFF on its source's own grid, optionally reprojected to the map's coordinate system (bilinear for elevation, nearest-neighbour for land cover). Leave Save to empty to write it to a temporary folder. The file may be named anything, spaces included.
  • Elevation and land cover are read with the GDAL library that ships in ArcGIS Pro's Python environment (arcgispro-py3), the same engine the QGIS plugin uses. The Copernicus DEM and ESA WorldCover tiles are Cloud Optimised GeoTIFFs, so only the part inside the area is downloaded, several blocks at a time. Each dataset is published on more than one server (AWS, OpenTopography's SDSC mirror, Microsoft Planetary Computer); the tool times all of them with a 1 MB test read and uses the fastest for the next half hour, because which one is fast depends on where you are.
  • Land cover arrives already classified: the GeoTIFF carries the publisher's colour map and an attribute table with lc_code and lc_class, and the layer is labelled by class name. Also add as polygons converts the classes into a polygon feature class in the project geodatabase with the same two fields (up to 60 million pixels).
  • Vector downloads are cached under %LOCALAPPDATA%\KGAToolbox\data_cache, so adding the same boundary twice costs one download and the second works offline (as do OpenTopography and Esri land-cover requests for the same area). Refresh re-reads the source ignoring the cached copy; Clear cache frees the space.
  • The OpenTopography API key can be kept, encrypted, in Windows Credential Manager with Remember.
  • Attribution is required by every source. The Google tile endpoints are not licensed for use outside Google's own APIs; whether a particular use is permitted is the map maker's decision.

Parameters for Add Open Data and Basemap
ផ្ទាំងគ្រប់គ្រងការពិពណ៌នា
Data type

Administrative boundaries, other vector data, basemap, DEM or land cover.

Data source

The publisher or service to read from.

Country

The country to fetch. Type a name to jump to it.

Admin level

ADM0 (country) to ADM5. Unpublished levels are greyed out.

Release / Geometry

geoBoundaries release series and simplified or full-detail geometry.

Extent / Scale

Natural Earth: one country or the whole world; 1:10m, 1:50m or 1:110m.

Dataset

The elevation model to read.

Year

The year a land-cover map represents.

Address

A custom data or tile address.

Zoom levels

The zoom range a basemap draws at.

Also keep it permanently

Saves the basemap as a layer file in Catalog Favorites.

API key / Remember

The OpenTopography key, and whether to keep it.

Area

How the DEM or land-cover area is chosen.

Draw rectangle / Draw polygon / Clear

Draws or clears the area on the map.

Layer / Selected features only

The layer whose extent or boundary is the area.

Reproject to the map's coordinate system

Projects the raster into the map's coordinate system.

Also add as polygons (lc_code, lc_class)

Also writes the land-cover classes as polygons.

Save to

The output GeoTIFF; empty for a temporary file.

Layer name

The name of the layer (and of the feature class for vector data).

Add to Map / Refresh / Clear cache

Adds the described data; re-reads the source; empties the download cache.

របៀបប្រើ

  1. On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Data Management group, click Add Open Data and Basemap.
  2. Choose a Data type and a Data source.
  3. For boundaries, pick the Country and Admin level. For a DEM or land cover, choose the Area — draw it, or pick a layer — and a Dataset or Year.
  4. Check the Details panel: publisher, year, licence and download size.
  5. Adjust the Layer name if needed and click Add to Map. A progress bar shows the download; Cancel stops it.

ព័ត៌មានអាជ្ញាបណ្ណ

Requires an active KGA Toolbox license. The tool validates the license before the window opens. The data itself is published under each source's own licence, which the Details panel shows and the layer metadata records.
