Add value to fields

Use it to stamp a batch code, a survey date, or a source note onto many features at once.

• Field Selector chooses which fields receive the value, so several fields can be populated in one pass.
• Value takes the constant to write. The fx button switches to expression entry, so the value can be derived from other fields rather than typed.
• Set null value writes null instead of a value. This is the way to clear a field deliberately — leaving Value blank is not the same thing, since an empty text value is not null.
• Treat empty text as null converts an empty string to null as it is written.
• Overwrite existing values governs what happens where the field already holds data:
  • Checked — existing values are replaced.
  • Unchecked — populated fields are left alone, so only empty ones are filled. Use this to fill in gaps without disturbing verified data.
• Use selected features only limits the operation to the current selection.
• There is no undo. With Overwrite existing values checked and no selection, the tool rewrites the field for every feature in the layer. Test on a selection first.
• To fill nulls using a computed strategy — a mean, a median, or the value of the nearest feature — use Default Value Filler instead.

1. On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Data Management group, open the VectorIQ menu, point to Manage, and click Add value to fields.
2. Set Target Layer.
3. Choose the fields in Field Selector.
4. Type the value in Value, or click fx to build an expression.
5. To fill only the gaps and protect existing data, leave Overwrite existing values unchecked.
6. Select a few features and check Use selected features only for a trial run, then click Add Value.
7. Verify the result, then clear the selection and run for the whole layer.
