Use this tool to stand up a line layer before digitizing. Because the field list, coordinate system, and Z/M properties are all set on one dialog, the layer is ready to edit as soon as the tool finishes — no follow-up trip to the Fields view.

- The Output Workspace and Output Coordinate System parameters are pre-populated from the current project's default geodatabase and the active map's spatial reference. Override either one if the new layer belongs elsewhere.
- Attribute fields are optional. Leave Add attribute fields? unchecked to create a layer with only the system-managed fields (
OBJECTID,SHAPE,SHAPE_Length), then add fields later. - When Add attribute fields? is checked, the Enter field name, type, and length value table becomes available. Add one row per field. Field Length applies only to text fields and is ignored for numeric, date, and binary types.
- Z-values and M-values cannot be added to a feature class after it is created. If the layer will store elevation or linear-referencing measures, set Include Z Value? or Include M Value? now.
- Use Template Datasets to copy the field schema of one or more existing datasets into the new layer. Fields defined in the value table are added in addition to the template fields.
- The output is added to the active map by default. Uncheck Add output to map? for batch or intermediate datasets.

- On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Data Creation group, click Create Line.
- Confirm Output Workspace. The project's default geodatabase is filled in automatically.
- Type a name in Enter Line Name.
- Confirm Output Coordinate System, or click the globe button to choose a different one.
- To define attribute fields now, check Add attribute fields? and add one row per field in the table below it.
- If the layer needs to store elevation or measure values, expand Additional Properties and set Include Z Value? or Include M Value?.
- Click Run. The layer is created and added to the active map.
