Khmer Font Converter

Legacy Khmer data was encoded for the Limon font family, where Khmer characters occupy Latin code points. Such text displays as Latin gibberish in any modern application unless the Limon font happens to be applied. This tool converts between the two encodings so the data becomes searchable, sortable, and portable.

  • Choose Converter sets the direction:
    • Unicode to Legacy (default) — converts modern Unicode Khmer into Limon encoding, for delivery to a system that still expects it.
    • Legacy to Unicode — converts Limon-encoded text into Unicode. This is the direction that rescues old data.
  • Both Select source field and Select target field are restricted to text fields.
  • Create new target field? decides where the output goes:
    • Checked — A new field named in New target field name receives the converted text, and the source field is left untouched. Always prefer this on a first run: it preserves the original, lets you compare the two side by side, and costs only a field.
    • Unchecked — The existing field named in Select target field is overwritten.
  • Converting in the wrong direction produces text that is not recoverable by simply converting back, because the two encodings are not a clean round trip for every character. Keeping the source field intact is the safeguard.
  • After a Legacy to Unicode conversion, set the layer's label and symbol fonts to a Unicode Khmer typeface (for example, Khmer OS or Hanuman); the Limon font will no longer render the converted text correctly.

The text field holding the text to convert. Text fields only.

Create new target field?ជម្រើសBoolean

Selects where the converted text is written.

  • Checked — A new field named in New target field name is created; the source is preserved.
  • Unchecked (default) — The field in Select target field is overwritten.
New target field nameជម្រើសString

The name of the new field to create. Required when Create new target field? is checked.

Select target fieldជម្រើសField

The existing text field to overwrite. Required when Create new target field? is unchecked. Text fields only.

របៀបប្រើ

  1. On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Data Management group, open the Attribute menu and click Khmer Font Converter.
  2. Set Choose Converter to the required direction — Legacy to Unicode to modernise old data.
  3. Set Input table and Select source field.
  4. Check Create new target field? and type a name in New target field name, so the original text is preserved.
  5. Click Run.
  6. Open the attribute table and compare the new field against the source. If the result is wrong, the direction was probably reversed — the source field is still intact, so simply run again with the other direction.
  7. For a Legacy to Unicode conversion, set the layer's label font to a Unicode Khmer typeface such as Khmer OS or Hanuman.
