The basemap layers on the Add Basemap menu are streamed and cannot be analysed or used offline. This tool turns that imagery into a real raster dataset on disk, which raster geoprocessing can read.

- The window is modeless, so the map stays usable while it is open — which is what makes drawing a download box on the map possible.
- Download extent offers four ways to define the area:
| Option | Area used |
|---|---|
| Map canvas extent | Whatever the map view currently shows. Refresh re-reads it after you pan or zoom. |
| Layer extent | The full extent of a chosen layer. |
| Draw box on map | A rectangle you draw. Click Draw, then drag a box on the map. |
| Clip to polygon | An existing polygon, so the output follows a real boundary rather than a rectangle. Selected features only narrows it to the current selection. |
- Zoom level is the setting that matters most. It controls ground resolution, and tile count grows fourfold with every level — so one level too high can turn a few hundred megabytes into a few gigabytes. Two aids are provided: The zoom range is clamped to what the source supports. Google Satellite allows up to level 21.
- Auto picks a zoom appropriate to the current map scale.
- Refresh estimate samples the source and reports the expected tile count and output size. Use it before every large download.
- Imagery source currently offers Google Satellite (maximum zoom 21, attributed Imagery © Google). Respect Google's terms of service — downloading and redistributing their imagery is not permitted under all uses.
- Format always offers GeoTIFF (
.tif), JPEG (.jpg), and PNG (.png). JPEG 2000 (.jp2) and ECW (.ecw) appear only when the GDAL build in ArcGIS Pro's Python reports a driver for them, so the list is shorter on some installations.- GeoTIFF is the only format that supports Build pyramids; the option is disabled for the others. Choose GeoTIFF for anything that will be used as a working raster.
- Transparent outside polygon applies when clipping to a polygon — the area outside the boundary is written as transparent rather than black.
- Enable checkpoint (resume if interrupted) records progress as tiles arrive, so a download broken by a dropped connection can continue instead of restarting. Worth enabling for any download over a few minutes.
- Connections sets how many tiles are fetched in parallel. Raising it speeds the download up but is also what gets a client rate-limited or blocked by a tile server — increase it cautiously.
- Output CRS defaults to the project CRS. Selected opens a coordinate system picker.
- Details shows the running log, and Show in folder opens the output location when the download finishes.
Requires ArcGIS Pro's Python with GDAL. The download and the raster write are performed by a Python worker running in Pro's own arcgispro-py3 environment, which ships GDAL. The tool cannot run if that environment is unavailable.

| Imagery source | The tile service to download from. Currently Google Satellite, maximum zoom 21. |
| Map canvas extent | Uses the current map view as the download area. |
| Refresh | Re-reads the map canvas extent after panning or zooming. |
| Layer extent | Uses the full extent of a chosen layer. |
| Draw box on map / Draw | Draws a rectangle on the map to define the area. |
| Clip to polygon | Clips the output to an existing polygon rather than a rectangle. |
| Selected features only | Restricts the clip polygon to the current map selection. |
| Zoom level | The tile zoom level, which sets ground resolution. Clamped to the source's supported range. Tile count grows fourfold per level. |
| Auto | Picks a zoom level appropriate to the current map scale. |
| Output CRS | The coordinate system of the output raster. Project CRS uses the project's; Selected opens a picker. |
| Format |
|
| Build pyramids | Builds overviews so the raster draws quickly when zoomed out. GeoTIFF only. |
| Transparent outside polygon | Writes transparent rather than black outside the clip polygon. |
| Connections | How many tiles are fetched in parallel. High values risk being rate-limited by the server. |
| Refresh estimate | Samples the source and reports expected tile count and output size. |
| Output folder | The folder that receives the raster. |
| File name | The output file name. Defaults to |
| Enable checkpoint (resume if interrupted) | Records progress so an interrupted download can resume. |
| Details | The running log for the current job. |
| Show in folder | Opens the output folder. |

- Zoom the map to the area you need, or add the boundary polygon you intend to clip to.
- On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Data Management group, click Imagery Downloader.
- Choose the Imagery source.
- Set the Download extent:
- For the current view, choose Map canvas extent and click Refresh.
- To draw an area, choose Draw box on map, click Draw, and drag a box on the map.
- To follow a boundary, choose Clip to polygon, pick the polygon layer, and check Transparent outside polygon.
- Set the Zoom level, or click Auto.
- Click Refresh estimate and read the expected tile count and file size. If it is larger than you expected, drop the zoom by one level and estimate again.
- Set Output CRS and choose a Format. Pick GeoTIFF and check Build pyramids for a working raster.
- Set the Output folder and File name.
- For a large download, check Enable checkpoint (resume if interrupted) and leave Connections at its default.
- Start the download and watch Details. When it finishes, click Show in folder.
