Shape Metrics

Where Statistics Summary summarises an attribute field, this tool summarises the geometry itself.

• The card groups its metrics by what they describe:

• Several of these are diagnostics rather than descriptions:
  • Multipart counts features made of more than one piece. An unexpected multipart count in a parcel layer usually means two separate areas share one record — often an editing accident.
  • Fill Ratio compares total feature area against the extent area. A very low ratio means the features occupy a small part of a large extent, which can indicate a stray feature far from the rest of the data.
  • Compactness flags elongated or convoluted geometry.
  • Avg Segment against Avg Edge indicates how densely the geometry is digitised.
• Areas and lengths are in the layer's coordinate system units, so run the tool on a projected layer for meaningful figures.
• Use selected features only restricts the metrics to the current map selection.
• Copy card puts the whole card on the clipboard.
• This tool reports aggregate figures. To flag individual features that fail a quality threshold, use Shape Quality Check.

1. Confirm the layer uses a projected coordinate system.
2. On the KGA Toolbox tab, in the Data Management group, open the VectorIQ menu, point to Analyze, and click Shape Metrics.
3. Set Layer.
4. Click Analyze.
5. Check Multipart — anything above zero in a parcel layer is worth investigating.
6. Check Fill Ratio — a very low value suggests a stray feature far from the rest.
7. Click Copy card to record the figures.

Requires an active KGA Toolbox license. The tool validates the license before running.
